An image from the film Contagion used to show COVID-19 victims

Claim

A mass burial was performed in China for victims of Covid-19

Verdict

Inaccurate (no factual basis; unacceptable margin of error)

Publications such as this one circulated on the Facebook sharing platform, showing an image of a scene in which dead people are being buried in a mass grave. The description of the image alluded to the fact that it was the burial of COVID-19 victims in China. This publication is inaccurate.

A legitimate image or fiction?

The image published in February 2020 shows individuals wearing protective equipment, and military vehicles, at the site of what publications have referred to as a mass burial. It reads as follows: "A mass grave for tens of thousands of victims of the virus. The crematorium, operating 24 hours a day, is unable to meet the demand due to the large number of deaths”.

To verify this image and to find its origin, we conducted a Google image search. The image is indeed of a mass burial, but it comes from the movie Contagion released in theatres in 2011. The image can be found in the trailer of the movie, starting at 2:20''. WHO and the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) collaborated with the film's directors to provide the expertise needed to shoot the film, which deals with a pandemic.

Have there been any mass burials in China because of COVID-19?

To date, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 84,547 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 4,645 deaths in China. However, the country has not reported the creation of mass graves, as this image suggests. In February 2020, the Chinese authorities opted for the cremation of the bodies of COVID-19 victims, as evidenced by this statement from the National Health Commission of China.

The image that has circulated on social networks does exist but not in the context of COVID-19. The image has nothing to do with reality or COVID-19. Our verdict: the publication is inaccurate and misleading.

To ensure information is accurate, it is strongly recommended to search the websites of governments or specialized institutions. In this way, we can avoid repeating misleading or non-factual statements.
